Bir kullanıcıyı hesabını kilitlemek ya da kilitli bir hesabı tekrar aktif hale getirmek için temel olarak usermod [-I|-U] <user> kalıbı kullanılır. Örneğin deneme adındaki kullanıcının hesabını kilitlemek için usermod -L deneme, tekrar aktif hale getirmek için de usermod -U deneme komutu kullanılmalıdır. Kullanıcı hesabını pasif hale getirmek için /etc/shadow dosyasında şifre alanından bulunan kodlanmış şifrenin önüne ünlem (!) simgesi konularak da bu işlem gerçekleştirilebilir. Ek bilgi olarak, eğer /etc/shadow dosyasında yer alan kullanıcıya ait şifre alanını boşaltmak isterseniz bunun için passwd -d <user> komutunu kullanmalısız. Fakat bu işlem kullanıcıyı devre dışı bırakmaz. Kullanıcı uzaktan sisteme bağlanmaya çalıştığında şifre istenilmeden girebilir. Bu yüzden hızlı kullanıcı devre dışı bırakma olarak bilinen bu yöntem kullanılmamalıdır. Bunun yerine hesap kilitleme tercih edilmelidir.
